I visited with this church perhaps a dozen times and had shared a meal off-site with Pastor Trent Cromwell on two occasions, whom I immediately took to and greatly enjoyed my fellowship with. During this time, I had questions from time to time during the general sermons for Pastor Austin Gardner, a very busy man that can be somewhat difficult to get a straight answer from while we visited. Everyone from the congregation we met was very pleasant. Still, I had some concerns about some of the content of the sermons and the great emphasis placed on the Old Testament notion of tithing as Pastor Gardner sought to raise money to build a new church building nearby.

I became friends on Facebook with both Pastors, during which time I became increasingly concerned about some of the posts made by Pastor Gardner. There was a picture of this beautiful, expensive looking tile and some other decorations for the new church, which I personally felt was a bit of a stumbling block, endeavoring to source lavish decorations for this new church site. It was then that Pastor Gardner replied somewhat coldly and defensively, "well, you might just stumble then." This wounded me a bit to read coming from the Head/Lead Pastor of a Church my family very much wanted to join, albeit we were ignored after several requests for information about the formal process to become members. I didn't want to misunderstand Pastor Gardner's intentions with his message but I did want to find out more about the church, its staff and their character. With both Pastor Gardner and Pastor Cromwell either ignoring my sincere inquiries or implying in no uncertain terms that they didn't have time to talk about these things, I decided to do my own research.

When I'd started to research the recent name change of Vision Baptist Church, I found that the name change correlated with some legal correspondence involving one of the legal officers of the previous 501(3)c. It was then that I noticed Pastor Gardner had two or three other 501(3)c's, one with a different version of his legal name registered as an officer, another with a shared CFO and one presumably in his son's name. What I found only got more strange as I continued this research. With no formal public disclosures, Form 990's, etc., I stumbled upon registrations for multiple privately owned single-engine plane(s) by Pastor Gardner, as well as multiple real estate properties. This was curious to me in light of all of the emphasis on tithing in accordance with the Old Testament to raise six figures for the new church site and its construction, given the income challenges of so many of the couples I met while our family visited with this Church. While there is certainly a biblical precedent for taking care of the needs of a Pastor, it seemed plain to me from Paul's time spent as a tent maker that the Pastor could have raised more money renting or selling one of his planes rather than taking food from the table of families in the congregation that were struggling. Still, I kept this to myself and privately messaged Pastor Gardner and Pastor Cromwell regarding these concerns.

Three weeks after sending these messages and being ignored, I was promptly informed by Pastor Cromwell that I had "no right to question the Pastor" and that I should instead "continue going to church and getting to know everyone better." When I expressed concerns about exposing my family to a church where there were questions in my mind that were biblically sound, our correspondence devolved further. I was accused of being arrogant to bring such questions to Pastor Gardner and that in so doing I was effectively "telling 200+ members that they're wrong about Pastor Gardner," that Pastor Gardner did not owe me nor was he obligated to provide an answer to my questions, despite acknowledging months prior that Pastor Cromwell "had enjoyed hearing my testimony" and that "it is wonderful to hear people being sensitive to the Spirit." Beware congregations led by self-willed shepherds akin to Diotrephes, without biblical support for their behavior.

  • Amazing Church! We have been attending since 2014 and absolutely love this church! We have 2 children and love the youth programs. The pastor walked us through pre-marital counseling and we were able to really get to know him and his wife. They truly have a heart for their congregation. This church goes verse by verse through the bible so you really get a unbiased look at what God's Word really says. Couldn't say enough great things about the associate Pastor's as well. We truly have a church family here!

  • This church is one of the most loving and mission minded churches in the world. They care for people no matter their background or what they have done in their past, and also will provide you with a clear presentation of what the Bible truly says.
